My Experience in KINE-P403

This page will give you a glimpse of my experience in my Theory and Practice of Cardiovascular Fitness (KINE-P403) course.

Introduction:

In KINE-P403, we learned about different forms of cardiorespiratory activity, how to lead group exercise courses, the importance of cardiovascular exercise, and how to help the general public meet the general guidelines for exercise. Every Monday of the semester, we participated in different forms of cardiorespiratory activity, including running, water aerobics, cycling, kickboxing, and Zumba. Every Wednesday of the semester, we were lectured on all things cardiovascular exercise, ranging from physiology and injuries to programming.  There were many learning opportunities throughout this course, but the two most impactful ones were creating a group exercise video and instructing a cycling class.

Instructing a Cycling Class:

On Monday, March 31st, I had the opportunity to instruct a cycling class with two of my classmates. Before we instructed the class, we all met to plan out the class and the music we would use for each part of the class. We decided how we would split up who would be the lead instructor (we each ended up doing 10 minutes), and then we practiced. When the day came, we were all nervous but well prepared. When instructing the class, I had so much fun! I really enjoyed cueing those in the class and encouraging them to keep going. Keeping everyone's energy and motivation up was so much fun! This experience motivated me even more to become a group fitness instructor after I graduate.

Creating a Group Exercise Video:

One of the final assignments for KINEP-403 was to create a group fitness exercise video. Since we were allowed to work in groups for this assignment, I chose to work with the same classmates I taught the cycling class with. My group and I decided to make a group exercise video for older adults to use. Throughout our video, we had one person leading the medium intensity exercise, one person performing the progression of the exercise, and one person performing the regression of the exercise.  In our 15-minute exercise video, we included a warmup and cooldown as well as paired our exercises with music. I found creating this video to be so much fun, and it opened my eyes to making exercise videos in the future. It also made me want to work with older adults in the future. Overall, this assignment introduced me to new passions and opportunities.

Reflection:

This course and its assignments have allowed me to improve my health and gain experience in instructing exercise courses. I really enjoyed trying different forms of cardiovascular activities every Monday of the semester. I also enjoyed learning about how to teach cardiovascular exercise classes and make cardiovascular training programs. I really enjoyed gaining experience leading the group exercise classes in person and on video. This course has opened my mind to new possibilities and helped me gain confidence in my exercise knowledge.  I look forward to using all of the information I learned in this course in my own life and while coaching clients in the future.
